Fishing Venues

Our fishing waters are home to a wide range of species, and we use artificial baits and lures to catch them. Among the smaller species, you’ll find Dwarf Tigerfish, Dwarf Kurper, River Sardines (also known as Glassies), Ghiellieminkies (Barbus), and Mosquito Fish. On the larger side, we commonly catch Barbel (Sharp Toothed Catfish), Carp, Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass, Makriel (Silver Barbel), Canary Kurper, Redbreast Kurper, Blue Kurper, Vlei Kurper, Papermouth, Mudfish, and Yellowfish. There are also some less common species in our waters, like Loodvis and Red Nose Mudfish.
Some of our dams, such as Doorndraai, Rust De Winter, Loskop, Roodeplaat, and Bronkhorstspruit, are located within nature reserves, offering the chance to see plenty of wildlife while you fish. Certain dams, like Rust De Winter, Arabie, Roodekoppies, and Loskop, are even home to crocodiles and, in some cases, hippos aswell. Arabie, in particular, is known for its impressively large crocodiles. Bird enthusiasts will also enjoy the variety of bird species found at these dams.
If you venture out to dams further away from the cities, you’ll find they’re usually quite clean and unpolluted. However, some dams, like Hartebeestpoort, are heavily polluted and best avoided.
